What to Expect

President Biden’s address comes amid one of the most unusual times in U.S. history here at home and around the world as inflation hits its highest point in decades, COVID continues to remain a contentious issue, and as he faces massive unpopularity at this time.

He’ll also be delivering his address amid one of the biggest conflicts on Europeans soil since World War II, as Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine and tensions between the west and the Kremlin continue to intensify.

One administration official said that the President will use his address to “make clear that there is more work to do, that there is more work to rebuild the economy towards resilience, security, and sustainability.”

Another official said “What you can expect the president to lay out tomorrow is how his plan, the ideas he’s put forward, lowers costs for families, can reduce the deficit and that it’s time for Congress to act. It’s time for Congress to get him a piece of legislation that addresses those core challenges for families right now.”

Some of that includes the President’s promised plans like child care, family and medical leave, energy costs and health care premiums.

The President will also try to tout his administration’s accomplishments like the American rescue plan and his Infrastructure package, as he continues to face scrutinizing polling numbers. The most recent polling average from pollster 538 has President Biden’s approval ratings at 40.7% and a 53.3% disapproval rating, the highest it’s been his entire term.

In his address, the President is also expected to talk about the supply chain crisis, lowering the costs of transporting goods, increasing fair competition and enterprise, and eliminating barriers to good paying jobs on which he’s expected to announce that anyone who wants to work, will get a job. The President plans to call this the “emerging manufacturing comeback”.

The President will also most certainly address the Ukraine crisis, which is at the top of all minds in Washington right now. He’ll talk about the sanctions his administration and European allies have imposed on Russian banks, their central bank, Russian oligarchs and Vladimir Putin himself, and will suggest Putin to reassess the costs of his invasion on Ukraine.

The President will also talk about Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, his first Supreme Court Justice nominee, who will make history as the first black woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court, something he promised to do back on the campaign trail.

Governor Kim Reynolds of Iowa (R-IA) will deliver the GOP’s response to President Biden’s address. The job to deliver the rebuttal is a highly coveted opportunity that brings a lot of press coverage, name recognition and plays a significant role in party politics. Senator Time Scott (R-SC) delivered the rebuttal last year. While Reynolds has not shown any interest in running for President in 2024, she is a rising star in the GOP, and can be a potential Vice Presidential pick, cabinet pick, or she could run for senate or other attain higher office in the future.

In her rebuttal, Reynolds is expected to hit major GOP talking points including inflation, she’ll tout her successes with the COVID pandemic which were different from most other states in terms of lockdowns and her opposition to mask and vaccine mandates. She’ll also likely discuss cover school choice, the Afghanistan withdrawal, Ukraine, Inflation among other things.
