What to expect from this year’s address:
President Biden’s address to nation will be his first to a divided Congress after Republicans took control of the House in November.
In his speech, President Biden hopes to focus on the economy as inflation continues to to remain at the top of Americans’ minds even though it has decreased in recent weeks. He’ll also address the war in Ukraine, as the world is just weeks away from marking one year since Russia launched its invasion into the country. President Biden will also be expected to address escalating tensions with China especially after a Chinese Surveillance balloon flew across the United States for 3 days until it was ultimately shot down over the Atlantic ocean.
President Biden’s address, which will likely be his largest audience this year, will deliver this speech at a time where uncertainty and dissatisfaction continues to reckon in the country. A Washington Post poll suggested that nearly 62% of Americans were dissatisfied with President Biden’s work, and felt that he failed to achieve much in his Presidency. The White House has pointed to the fact that much of the President’s biggest legislative achievements won’t go into effect until this year, however the polling sets up a difficult environment for the President who must work with the Republican congress to get his agenda through.
The address is also expected to be the unofficial kickoff for the 2024 Presidential election as the President outlines the biggest issues of contention for the campaign season in his speech, and his biggest accomplishments in office. The address will be the biggest opportunity for the President to make his case for reelection since by his next address the first states on the primary calendar will have begun voting.
What to expect from this year’s address:
- Who is delivering the address: Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders of Arkansas
- When: 10-15 minutes after the President’s address
- Location: Little Rock, Arkansas
- Where to watch: Most of the major networks will air the rebuttal after the President’s address
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders of Arkansas (R-AR) will deliver the GOP’s response to President Biden’s address. The job to deliver the rebuttal is a highly coveted opportunity that brings a lot of press coverage, name recognition and plays a significant role in party politics, however can be a dreaded job-some of the most notable moments from responses have been for the wrong reasons, including Senator Marco Rubio’s response when he took a brief break in the middle to drink a glass of water. Governor Kim Reynolds (R-IA) delivered the rebuttal last year.
Sanders was recently sworn in as Governor, becoming the youngest governor in the country. Sanders previously served as one of former President Donald Trump’s Press Secretaries. She has made headlines recently for her controversial policies after taking office through a wide variety of executive orders, such as banning the term “Latinx”, among other policies.
In a statement, Sanders said she would use her rebuttal to contrast “the GOP’s optimistic vision for the future against the failures of President Biden and the Democrats” She is expected to discuss inflation, foreign policy and national security crises-including the recent Chinese surveillance balloon, and many social issues such as abortion, guns among other things.
