Secretary of Housing and Urban Development to step down

Washington, D.C. — In a surprising development, Marcia Fudge, who has served as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) since March 2021, is set to leave her post later this month. The announcement was made by the White House on Monday, marking the departure of the second Cabinet member during President Joe Biden’s first term12.

A Legacy of Advocacy and Reform

When Fudge assumed the role of HUD Secretary, she inherited a housing system that had been significantly impacted by policy changes during the prior administration. Her tenure was marked by a commitment to rebuilding and strengthening the department’s core functions. Fudge focused on two critical areas:

  1. Fair Housing and Civil Rights: Fudge worked tirelessly to restore fair housing and civil rights protections that had been dismantled. She championed efforts to ensure equal access to housing opportunities for all Americans, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status.
  2. Generational Wealth and Affordability: Recognizing the importance of homeownership in building generational wealth, Fudge advocated for policies that would make housing more affordable. She emphasized the need to lower costs for renters and expand opportunities for homeownership.

Biden’s Praise and Gratitude

President Biden expressed his appreciation for Fudge’s contributions to the administration. In a statement, he said, “From her time as a mayor to her years as a fierce advocate in the U.S. House of Representatives, Marcia’s vision, passion, and focus on increasing economic opportunity have been assets to our country. I’m grateful for all of her contributions toward a housing system that works for all Americans, and I wish her well in her next chapter” 1.

Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman Assumes Interim Role

Following Fudge’s departure, Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman will step in as the acting secretary. Todman, an experienced leader within HUD, will continue the department’s work while the search for a permanent replacement takes place.

A Rare Departure from the Cabinet

Fudge’s decision to step down makes her only the second Cabinet secretary to leave the administration during Biden’s presidency. The first was Marty Walsh, who departed in March 2023 after serving as Labor Secretary for two years. Fudge’s departure underscores the challenges and dynamics within the administration as it navigates critical policy areas, including housing and urban development.

As the Biden administration reshapes its leadership team, all eyes are on the next steps for HUD. Fudge’s legacy will undoubtedly leave an impact, and her commitment to housing equity and affordability will continue to shape the department’s future.
