Democrats have just gained control of the U.S. Senate after senator Catherine Cortez Masto won her close reelection campaign against Republican challenger Adam Laxalt.

After Senator Mark Kelly’s race was called this morning, Democrats just needed to secure one of the two outstanding senate races in Georgia and Nevada to secure their majority. After Democrats won Nevada’s Senate seat, control of the upper chamber is once again 50/50 with Vice President Kamala Harris to break the tie, giving Democrats the majority.

Senator Catherine Cortez Masto won reelection after a close race against her Republican challenger Adam Laxalt

In a speech to supporters in New York, Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer declared “a vindication for Democrats, our agenda, and for the American people.” He continued “The American people rejected the anti-democratic extremist MAGA Republicans.””

A senate runoff in Georgia still remains for Senator Raphael Warnock ‘s (D-GA) seat and his challenger Herschel Walker, however with Cortez Masto’s victory in Nevada, Democrats can afford to loose this race.
