Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) was charged by federal officials of bribery charges for the second time. Prosecutors alleged this time that Menendez accepted gifts from investment bankers affiliated with the Qatari government., in exchange for securing certain deals.
The charges marked the second time Menendez has been charged with federal bribery and corruption charges after he was charged with doing something similar for the government of Egypt in September.
Despite calls from the governor of New Jersey, and several Senate colleagues, Menendez has refused to resign, and has also indicated his intention to run for reelection. So far New Jersey first lady, Tammy Murphy, and representative Andy Kim have announced that they will be challenging Menendez.
