BREAKING: House Republicans select Rep. Mike Johnson to be House Speaker

After weeks of turmoil and uncertainty, House Republicans elected Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) to be the 56th Speaker of the House.

Johnson was the fourth house Republican to be nominated by the conference after the historic ousting of former Speaker McCarthy. Since McCarthy’s removal over three weeks ago, House Republicans selected House Majority Leader, Steve Scalise (R-LA), Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), and Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN), who was the nominee just yesterday.

House Republicans coalesced around Johnson after weeks of internal divisions and squabbling. Johnson’s accession to the Speakership caps a 7 year career in the House. Some of Johnsons’s first tasks as Speaker will be to negotiate a spending bill ahead of the November 17 deadline, as well as finalizing President Biden’s proposed $105 Billion aid package for Israel and Ukraine.
