Former President Donald Trump has officially announced his candidacy for a third time after staying out of main sphere of politics for two years since he left the White House in January 2021.
The decision comes as no surprise to any corner of the political world as the former President had been teasing a potential third run from the moment his term ended. He had declared in the middle of last year, in a Fox News town hall with Sean Hannity, that he had made up his mind about running, but came short of confirming it.
While Trump remains the standard bearer of the Republican party, last week’s election showed an apparent weaknesses in his leadership and has sowed doubt among some Republicans of his role as the leader of the GOP. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has come out as a major challenge to Trump’s clout within the party owing to his reelection victory which saw a margin of nearly 20%, unheard of in Florida politics.
As the 2024 field shapes out, President Trump has not shied away from attacking his potential opponents to establish his credibility. Even as the former President looses his grip over his leadership, he still remains the most prominent member of his party. Whether or not it sustains will be left to time.
