BREAKING: DAY 2-McCarthy falls short of Majority to be Speaker a Fifth time

House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has failed to win his Speakership vote a fifth time after 20 members of his caucus defected from the key vote. The 20 Representatives voted for Rep. Byron. Donalds (R-FL). The loss comes amid reports that McCarthy is now in talks with House Democrats for a “consensus candidate” per reports from the Hill. One Representative, Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN) voted “present”.

Newly minted House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries continues to lead, with 0 defections from his conference.

A fifth round of voting is expected.
